What is the hip joint ?

The hip joint is a multiaxial synovial joint of ball-and-socket (spheroidal, cotyloid) type. It has articular surfaces, fibrous capsule, ligaments, synovial membrane and bursa.  The nerve supply to the hip is from the femoral nerve or its muscular branches, the obturator and accessory obturator nerves, the nerves to quadrants femoris and the superior gluteal muscle.

The movement of the hip joint can be categorized as Flexion-extension, adduction-abduction, medial and lateral rotation, and circumlocution, conveniently considered as rotations around three orthogonal axes.

Why we need an arthroplasty ?

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a remarkably successful and predictable procedure that provides pain relief, functional improvement ,and improved quality of life for several hundred thousand patients each year world wide

What's the symptom of arthritis?

Pain and limited motion ,so patients couldn't easily move. Going weak of muscle around joint make hard of joint movement. When Joint destroyed by inflammation ,we must do arthroplasty to make that patient can do normal life

Most of acute phase symptom are swelling, fever, movement disorder of joint. Inflammation is normal reaction of body, this inflammation improved rapidly ,the joint that has inflammation destroyed and become disability.

How we can diagnosis of arthritis?

About bony arthritis of rheumatoid arthritis, we could see from patient's symptom, physical examination, laboratorial and radiologic finding. If we can't make a diagnosis when disease is on acute, we can use a bone scan or MRI. Early after diagnosis, we usually try medication and others (osteotomy) to relief of  pain and discomfort. But if we failed this method, we should do joint replacement(arthroplasty)

Rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is a progressive autoimmune disease of the synovial joints.

The cause is unknown. It is characterized by chronic systemic erosive synovitis of peripheral joints and is associated with an elevated rheumatoid factor in the majority of patients. Associated nonarticular manifestations may include subcutaneous nodules, vasculitis, pericarditis, pulmonary nodules and interstitial fibrosis, mononeuritis multiplex, espiscleritis, and Sjogren's and Felty's syndromes.

Pathogenesis : The primary cause of rheumatoid arthritis is unknown. Investigations of the etiology have focused on interrelationships of infectious agents, genetics, and autoimmunity.
